Big Guy Hats Display, throughout October: The best of Jeff Kahlow’s Packer-themed foam creations will be on display.
Sport Helmet Fitting, Saturday, October 1, 10 a.m. to noon: A safe helmet is a well-fitting helmet. Drop in with your helmet(s) and let a trained member of the Fond du Lac Police Dept. assess fit and make adjustments where necessary. No registration required.
History of the Green Bay Packers, Tuesday, October 4, 6:30 p.m.: Tour Guide and super-historian Tom Pidgeon from Lambeau Field’s Packers Hall of Fame will present a sweeping overview of the history of Wisconsin’s favorite team with attention to Coach Lombardi’s role in that history. Plenty of time for questions and answers. No registration required.
Books Between Bites, Tuesday, October 11, 12:10-12:50 p.m. at Salem United Methodist Church: Former football player and coach Sal Curcurio will lead a Books Between Bites review and discussion of the Fond du Lac Reads selection. Coffee and soda available; bring a sack lunch. The discussion will take place downstairs in the Fellowship Hall at Salem United Methodist Church, 120 Sheboygan St. Call (920) 921-8605 for information.
Meet the Author, Thursday, October 13, 6 p.m. at Windhover Center for the Arts: Pulitzer Prize winner David Maraniss will be on hand for an intimate gathering before the free public event. Copies of “When Pride Still Mattered” will be available for sale and signing. Event includes hors d’oeuvres, cash bar and reserved seating at 7 p.m. event. Seating limited. Tickets, $5, for sale at the library’s Main Desk and at the Windhover Center for the Arts, 51 Sheboygan St.
An Evening with David Maraniss, Thursday, October 13, 7 p.m. at the Windhover Center for the Arts: The author will talk with Mike Mentzer of The Reporter about his experience writing about the great coach and what he learned along the way. Maraniss also will talk about his other noted books, including “They Marched Into Sunlight” and his upcoming biography of President Barack Obama, “Man of the World.” Copies of “When Pride Still Mattered” will be available for sale and signing. Packer Pet Parade, Saturday, October 15, 11 a.m.: Dress up your dog, cat, ferret, turtle, wombat – anything goes – in his best Green Bay Packers finery and parade around the library (or inside, if weather is uncooperative). Prizes for Best Use of Green and Gold, Most Like Lombardi and Most Enthusiastic Fan (pet, that is). Registration required at the Calendar or in person at the library’s Main Desk.
Jeff Kahlow and the Big Guy Hats Story, Wednesday, October 19, 6:30 p.m.: Fond du Lac’s own Jeff Kahlow will tell the story of how his business, Big Guy Hats, started small in his garage and went big. In a presentation with plenty of photos, Kahlow will showcase some of his most famous creations and talk about how his work has made him one of the regulars at Lambeau Field. With special door prize from Big Guy Hats. No registration required. Seating limited.
Book Discussion by Two Experts, Tuesday, October 25, 6:30 p.m.: Two experts – one in sports, one in literature – join forces to discuss the themes presented in “When Pride Still Mattered.” Mike Dressler, of St. Cloud, has been involved in football for 47 years. Most recently, he retired as head coach at Horace Mann High School in North Fond du Lac. Mike also has coached at Fond du Lac High School and high schools in Milwaukee, Nicolet, Wausau West and West Allis. Mike played left end in high school, wide receiver at UW-Whitewater and played semipro ball for the West Allis Spartans and the Racine Raiders. Librarian Susan Ringer has been helping Fond du Lac readers find their favorite books for many years. Susan has a particular interest in books about Wisconsin and written by Wisconsin authors.
