When Pride Still Mattered by David Maraniss

If you haven’t already read the Fond du Lac Reads title When Pride Still Mattered, I urge you to do so. It is well worth the time. The book is a biography of Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi. The Broadway play Lombardi was based on the book and will be performed at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater through November 13. Last night the author David Maraniss was at the Windhover Center for the Arts fielding questions from local Fond du Lac Reporter editor Mike Mentzer and members of the audience. Maraniss speaks the way he writes—clear-eyed and balanced. When Pride Still Mattered relates not only the great things that Lombardi did as coach of the Green Bay Packers but also Lombardi’s weaknesses in a clear-eyed and balanced manner. If you remember the “Glory Years” you should read When Pride Still Mattered. If you don’t remember the “Glory Years” you should read the book to find out what you missed! There are still upcoming programs for Fond du Lac Reads: Packer Pet Parade on Saturday, October 15, Jeff Kahlow and Big Guy Hats story on Wednesday, October 19, and Book Discussion with former coach Mike Dressler and me on Tuesday, October 25.
