Dollar Design Contest for kids

Canada’s paper money comes in five different colors. The Euro is likewise a rainbow. Put the U.S. dollar up against other countries’ currencies, and it seems a bit drab.

Kids have a chance to imagine a different look in the Money Smart Week Dollar Design Contest. Prizes will be awarded in two age categories: kindergarten through second grade and third through fifth grade.

Entries must be submitted on official entry forms, which also are available at the Fond du Lac Public Library, CitizensFirst Credit Union, Fond du Lac Credit Union, Horicon Bank, Guaranty Bank and M&I Part of BMO Financial Group.

Entries must be submitted to the Fond du Public Library between April 1 and April 14. Winners will be announced at 2 p.m. April 21 at the library during the Big Read. Prizes have been donated by Fays Fun ‘n Learning, Fond du Lac Theater, Karl Ray Lanes, Ledgeview Lanes, Guaranty Bank, Spectrum Skating, Taco Bell, Hardee’s, Domino’s Pizza and Culver’s.

The contest is a part of Money Smart Week Wisconsin, celebrated April 21 to April 28. Money Smart Week, in coordination with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, offers a series of classes and activities designed to help consumers better manage their personal finances.

The week’s kickoff event, the Living for Women conference, will take place at 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at UW-Fond du Lac, and will feature breakout sessions on topics such as upcycling and entrepreneurship as well as a keynote address from Dannelle Gay, a Madison mom who saved $40,000 in one year through couponing and smart shopping. The conference fee includes continental breakfast. Download and print the complete conference schedule and registration form.

Money Smart Week also will feature the Big Read at the library from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, featuring stories and activities for children in kindergarten through third grade. Families that register in advance will receive a free copy of the book, “The Berenstain Bears and the Trouble with Commercials.” Parents must attend with children; siblings are welcome. Space is limited; families should register through the Calendar, or by calling the library’s Children’s Desk at (920) 929-7080, ext. 127. Libraries across Wisconsin, including the Brandon Public Library, are participating in this year’s Big Read.
