Learn geocaching Aug 8

Rediscover how fun it can be to play outside at night in the summertime through the family-friendly phenomenon of geocaching.

Avid local geocachers Kyle Schmitz and Vanessa Theel will offer Intro to Geocaching at 6 p.m. Wednesday, August 8, at the Fond du Lac Public Library.

Geocache players use hand-held GPS devices to find containers, or geocaches, that have been hidden outside by other players at various locations. They then share their experiences online. It's a modern-day mashup between hide and seek and a treasure hunt.

Schmitz, a student at UW-Oshkosh, and Theel, who attends Dordt College in Iowa, will explain how geocaching works and will guide participants through a mini game right at the library. Handheld GPS units will be available at the session, but participants also can bring their own. The program may take participants outside the library to hunt for geocaches.

The class is free and open to the public. Registration not required.
