Adult book clubs open to new members

The slow turn from summer to fall sends all sorts of signals to our bodies and minds. Even if a person’s back-to-school days are long gone, this can be a time when books and reading get extra attention. So it’s a perfect time to consider a book club.

Both of the Fond du Lac Public Library’s book clubs are accepting new members. Ladies of the Evening Book Group meets 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month, and the Afternoon Delight Book Group meets 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. the second Wednesday of the month.

Participation is free and open to all. Groups choose their own books by consensus, and the library provides enough copies for all. Members meet to discuss the themes and ideas from that month’s book. They share their thoughts and reactions and often enjoy hearing different points of view.

Librarian Susan Ringer helps the clubs by providing title suggestions, keeping track of membership and what’s been discussed, and making sure the library has enough copies of the groups’ selections a month in advance.

Ringer said there’s been interest in starting a third club that would meet either on a morning or Saturday. Persons interested should contact Ringer at (920) 322-3938 or [email protected].

Earlier this year the library started lending Book Club Kits, which are available to anyone with a library card. The kits contain 10 copies of the same book accompanied by a list of discussion questions. Anyone with a library account in good standing can borrow up to two kits at a time, each for 45 days. Kits can be reserved, too, through the standard holds system. There are 26 kits available, with more added regularly. Titles include “The Tiger’s Wife,” by Tea Obreht, “Cutting for Stone,” by Abraham Verghese, “Heaven is for Real,” by Todd Burpo and “Sing You Home,” by Jodi Picoult.

To sign up for a book club, contact Susan Ringer at ring[email protected] or (920) 322-3938.
