Exhibit a love letter to downtown FDL
Mel Kolstad brings history to life with a collection of paper collages and mixed media pieces in her show, My Downtown: A Collection of Collages Celebrating Fond du Lac on display throughout November in the Fond du Lac Public Library gallery.
Kolstad, a Fond du Lac resident, a founding member of Fond du Lac Visual Arts and a charter committee member of Tour the Town Art Walk, said the exhibit comes from her strong connections to downtown. All the buildings rendered have a special place in her heart.
“Since moving to Fond du Lac in 1996, I’ve felt a connection, a sense of community in our downtown,” Kolstad said. “There are so many wonderful shops, restaurants and opportunities for entertainment in this great city of ours. This exhibit is my love letter to the people and places of downtown.”
The artist will host a public reception to celebrate the show from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, November 15, in the gallery. The event is free, and refreshments will be served.
Kolstad calls herself a self-taught artist and says she constantly is learning. Her love of vintage ephemera – printed materials originally meant to be discarded, such as tickets or letters – fuels much of her work. She worked with the library on two recent projects: the donor recognition piece at FDLPL Express and the Detritus Project, a collage using items left behind in returned books.
The exhibit is presented by Fond du Lac Visual Arts, a professional arts group devoted to art awareness and education, development and enhancement of artists’ skills and strengthening connections between art and commerce in the Fond du Lac area.
