February gallery exhibit features disabled artists

Thirty award-winning works of art by Wisconsin children and adults with disabilities will be featured in Creative Power: VSA Wisconsin’s Traveling Exhibition February 1 through 25 in the Fond du Lac Public Library gallery.

Five artists from the region will be represented in the exhibit: Emma Doty of Berlin, Jordan Horn of Ripon, Jacob Dewhurst of New Holstein, Torin Wilke of Hortonville and Joyce Gust of Winneconne. The exhibit includes paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculptures and mixed media.

The charcoal drawing, Eye See You, by 2012 Young Adult award winner Dewhurst, is a finely detailed depiction of an animal up close. The texture of the fur is beautifully rendered, compelling the viewer to come to eye-to-eye with the subject of this cleverly titled piece.

“Art is a way to express myself,” Dewhurst said. “I create art because when I create, I forget all of my worries and just concentrate on making the piece of art.”

Jordan Horn, also a 2012 Youth award winner, combines marker pen with digital drawing in her expressive, Gloria.

“I make art all the time,” Horn said. “I draw and draw and draw. I use different color markers. I have my own computer. I love to draw and paint over pictures and put pictures together.”

VSA Wisconsin conducts arts programming in more than 30 cities and towns annually. Programs include artist residencies in PreK-12 classrooms and in community settings; community choirs; creative art and music classes and workshops; art sales events; training and professional development for artists and educators; and disability awareness training. VSA Wisconsin uses the arts to expand the capabilities, confidence and quality of life for adults and children with disabilities.

The exhibit is supported in part by Xcel Energy Foundation; the Dept. of Public Instruction through a federal discretionary grant; the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts; Herbert H. Kohl Charities, Inc.; and Kikkoman Foods Foundation.

The library gallery is curated by Fond du Lac Visual Arts, a professional arts group devoted to art awareness and education, development and enhancement of artists’ skills and strengthening connections between art and commerce in the Fond du Lac area.
