'La Boheme' - up close & personal

Puccini’s beloved opera La Boheme was a smash hit when it debuted in Italy in 1896. Today, it's one of the most-frequently performed operas in the world. Local aficionado the Rev. Jack Stubbs will host a lively discussion of the work at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, at the Fond du Lac Public Library. Stubbs’ wife, Laura Deming, is a cellist with Lyric Opera of Chicago. The talk is free and open to the public. No registration required.

The opera follows the lives of young bohemians – artists, writers, musicians – living and loving in the Latin Quarter of Paris in the 1840’s. Stubbs will discuss the opera, play excerpts and engage discussion. Deming may be on hand to participate in the discussion, if weather permits travel. The musical, Rent, which opened on Broadway in 1996, and which was performed by the Fond du Lac Community Theater last summer, is a modern retelling of the classic story.

The Windhover Center for the Arts is leading a day trip to the Lyric Opera of Chicago for a matinée performance of La Boheme on Friday, March 15. Information is available at www.somedaytravel.com.
