Sign up for Oct 3 Scrabble Bee

If you know what sesquioxidizing* is, you need to sign up right away for the Fond du Lac Literacy Services Scrabble Bee on October 3. Because if you do understand the art of sesquioxidizing, you probably already know that the word is on record as being the highest-scoring-ever in a game of Scrabble.

But if you’re like 99.99 percent of humanity, you’re more interested in having a good time and perhaps doing a good deed. These, too, will be on order at the Scrabble Bee at the Fond du Lac Public Library.

The event is a fundraiser for Fond du Lac Literacy Services, which offers free one-on-one tutoring for adults who need help with reading, writing, math and the English language.

Teams of up to three players can sign up at the Scrabble Bee page online, or find registration forms at the library. Teams will work together in two, 15-minute rounds on standard Scrabble boards with standard Scrabble rules. With a twist: During round two, each team will have 10 tiles taken away at random. Teams can buy back tiles of their choosing. The event will include snacks, door prizes and prizes for the top three scoring teams.

The Scrabble Bee will be held Thursday, October 3, in the McLane Room in the lower level of the Main Library. Registration starts at 5:30 p.m., and play gets underway at 6 p.m. Minimum pledge per team is $30. Along with the online registration, rules and more information can be found at the Scrabble Bee page.

Event supporters include Triple Word Sponsors Domino’s Pizza, Dynamic Chiropractic, FDL Evening Optimist Club, FOE FDL Eagles Aerie 270, FDL Evening Optimist Club, National Exchange Bank & Trust, Radio Plus, Service League FDL and Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC.

For more information, contact the Literacy office at (920) 322-3932 or email [email protected]. Note: The organization needs donations of Scrabble games for the event, new or gently used. Games with missing pieces are OK. Games can be dropped off at any Fond du Lac Public Library location.

Fond du Lac Literacy Services, a United Way agency, is a nonprofit organization headquartered on the second floor of the Fond du Lac Public Library downtown. The organization provides opportunities for adult students to gain basic skills needed to learn and prosper in the 21st Century.

*Sesquioxidizing is the creation of a sesquioxide, which is an oxide containing three atoms of oxygen with two atoms (or radicals) of another element. But you knew that.
