Christmas is almost here!

Christmas is only days away, and I am sure many of you are rushing around trying to finish up all those last minute holiday tasks. It can be a stressful time, and sometimes you just need to take a step back and focus on what Christmas is really about. The library can help! We have a wonderful display of Christmas fiction, with titles ranging from over the top humor to heartwarming and inspirational, guaranteed to get you in the Christmas spirit.

One of my all-time favorite Christmas books is The Shepherd, the Angel, and Walter the Christmas Miracle Dog by Dave Barry. It is a heartwarming and fun tale about a young boy in the 60s, Doug Barnes, who gets recruited to play a shepherd in his church's annual Christmas Eve pageant. And what a pageant it turns out to be. You can't help but laugh at poor Doug, who is dealing with all sorts of adolescent angst, including friends who get him into trouble, having a crush on the girl playing Mary in the pageant, and a faithful old dog who is on his last legs. The dog, named Frank, is described in the book as "a cross between a Labrador retriever and a Saint Bernard and an aircraft carrier". Where the old dog ends up is truly a Christmas miracle! It's a wonderful story of family, and Christmas, with humorous moments that could have happened to anyone. Dave Barry is a master at mixing real life situations with just the right amount of humor, and this little book is a perfect example. Anyone who grew up in the 60s is sure to relate.

So, stop by the library, check out our holiday display, and pick up a Christmas tale or two. Happy Holidays from the staff of the Fond du Lac Public Library!
