For fans of Downton Abbey

The Library currently has a display of books for people who are fans of Downton Abbey, and I am one of them so I found the book Below Stairs by Margaret Powell to be fascinating. Powell was born in 1907 and had to start work when she was 13 years old. The book was originally published in 1968 but was reissued. The book jacket of the reissued edition says “the classic kitchen maid’s memoir that inspired Upstairs, Downstairs and Downton Abbey” and that sums up the book. It is full of the author’s interesting anecdotes and plain-spoken opinions of the people both upstairs and downstairs. There are other nonfiction books on display as well as fiction books that have similar settings and themes as Downton Abbey. And now if you will excuse me, I will ring for tea.
