'It All Started on Kelley Road' Mar 15

Celebrating roles the Kelley women played in turning a small family farm into a successful regional attraction, Karen Kelley will present It All Started on Kelley Road, at 2 p.m. and repeated at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 15, at the Fond du Lac Public Library. The free program, part of the library’s monthly History at Home series, is sponsored by Soroptimists of Fond du Lac in observation of Women’s History Month. Refreshments will be served. No registration required.

Kelley, who will bring ice cream samples from the famed Kelley Country Creamery – crowned Best Ice Cream Ever by “Good Morning America” – will tell stories of the Kelley women and their families over the enterprise’s 157-year history. She credits patience, perseverance and passion for their success.

Kelley was born in Milwaukee and raised in West Bend. She earned an associate’s degree in Business and Marketing from Moraine Park Technical College. She began her career in dairy farming when she married Tim Kelley 33 years ago. The couple has five children and four grandchildren.

Karen Kelley’s long-held passion and dream were realized when Kelley Country Creamery opened in May 2010. The shop, located with the Kelley cows in full view, continues to grow and entertain new customers every day. In her spare time, Karen Kelley enjoys spending time with her family and traveling (especially visiting ice cream shops).

Soroptimists of Fond du Lac is a local club affiliated with the international business and professional women’s volunteer organization that works to improve the lives of women and girls. The name, Soroptimist, means “best for women.”

The library’s History at Home series every third Thursday at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. highlights stories of local and state history. Upcoming programs include:

  • April 19: Following the Train Tracks
  • May 17: 40 Years of Walleye Weekend
  • June 21: For the Love of Cheeses
