Tasty history of cheese in WI on Jun 21

In a fitting tribute to June Dairy Month, the Fond du Lac Public Library’s History at Home series will feature For the Love of Cheeses at 2 p.m. and repeated at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 21. Complementing the fascinating history will be plenty of tasty artisan cheese samples. The programs are free; no registration required.

Cheese and Food Technologist Dean Sommer of the UW-Madison Center for Dairy Research will describe how the dairy industry took hold in Wisconsin and how it evolved over the years into prominence as the cheese capital of the United States. He'll look at the importance of the artisan cheese movement and how it helps Wisconsin’s dairy industry.

Sommer serves as a technical resource, consultant and educator to the dairy industry regarding cheese, whey products and processing. Sommer has more than 18 years of experience in the industry, having worked at one of the largest cheese and whey product facilities in the United States. He has bachelor degrees in Biology and Chemistry as well as a master’s in Food Science.

The library’s History at Home series, every third Thursday at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., highlights stories of local and state history. Upcoming programs include:
