Yarn Crafters drop-in group starts May 11

Needle arts enthusiast Jan Stoegbauer, who has taught Beginning Knitting and Beginning Crochet several times at the Fond du Lac Public Library, is starting an informal group – Yarn Crafters – that will meet every other Thursday 6-8 p.m. starting on May 11.

The group will gather to share the hobbies of knitting and crochet, work on projects, get help and advice and make projects for donation to community nonprofit groups. Knitters and crocheters of all skill levels and experience are invited.

May 18 Picture Shows: Fires & Firefighting

The Fond du Lac Public Library’s popular History at Home series on May 18 will feature the second installment of a new quarterly event: Fond du Lac Picture Shows. At 2 p.m. and repeated at 6 p.m., Tracy Reinhardt of the Fond du Lac County Historical Society will share a slideshow of archival photos of the fires and firefighters in the area’s past.

My Hometown for budding historians May 17 & 24

Historians Dr. Rick Whaley and Herman Bender know there’s much to learn and uncover about our local history. In their annual wintertime history presentations at the Fond du Lac Public Library, now into year four, they’ve uncovered an enormous local appetite for the stories of our past.

Relax with Mandala Stones May 20

The Sanskrit word mandala means circle. The art of creating mandalas, which represent the cosmos, the self and unity, is said to be therapeutic. Crafters at the Fond du Lac Public Library will relax by painting Mandala Stones at the 1 p.m. Saturday, May 20, Crafternoon program. The program is free, all supplies provided. Open to adults and teens age 13 and older. Space is strictly limited.

Mindfulness & Well-Being May 11

It’s said that mindfulness – awareness that comes through paying attention to the present moment without judgment – can help manage stress, improve family relationships and promote health. Larissa Duncan, Ph.D., of UW-Madison will present Mindfulness and Well-Being: Change Your Brain, Change Your Life, at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at the Fond du Lac Public Library.

Dueling pizza dough recipes May 16

Despite the debates about what toppings should and shouldn’t go on a pizza, there’s no doubt that the heart and soul of America’s second-favorite pie is the crust. Since modern pizza’s origins as simple flatbread in 1700s Naples, Italy, bakers have searched for the perfect dough recipe.

Volunteers needed at Opportunity Center

The Fond du Lac Public Library’s Opportunity Center is a free computer lab resource where under- and unemployed people can get help looking for work, writing resumes and researching employers. The center is staffed by local volunteers who work one-on-one with users, many of whom lack computer skills. This help is essential.

My Favorite Fondy Calendar Art Contest winners

The Fond du Lac Public Library challenged local artists and photographers to submit illustrations for a new project, the My Favorite Fondy 2018 wall calendar, which will be sold later this year as a fundraiser.
