Tweens to make stop-animation movies April 30

Who needs Hollywood? Tweens ages 9 to 13 are invited to the Fond du Lac Public Library’s Tween Scene program at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 30, to try their hand at making stop-animation movies. Using iPads and clay, Lego, puppets and more, tweens will try different ways to create movies. The program is free. No registration required.

Spring break starts with Half-Day Party April 3

Get spring break started off right by celebrating half-day Friday at the Fond du Lac Public Library. Kids ages 6-12 are invited to an afternoon party at 1 p.m. Friday, April 3, with Battle-It-Out-Bingo, snacks and the showing of Big Hero 6. Free. No registration.

'Ultimate Cheapskate' shares tips April 25

The “Ultimate Cheapskate” Jeff Yeager will present Finding Wholesale Happiness in a Retail World, at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at the Fond du Lac Public Library. He’ll give tips on how to spend less and enjoy life as the final event in the annual Money Smart Week celebration. The program is free. No registration required.

Food for Fines April 11-25

From April 11 through April 25, the Fond du Lac Public Library will waive $1 in overdue fines for each donation of a nonperishable food item to celebrate National Library Week (April 12-18) and Money Smart Week (April 18-25) and to support local food pantries.

Teen 'Ahh Spa' set for April 26

Scrub away the long, dry winter with a day at the spa. Teens in grades six to 12 are invited to pamper themselves at Ahh Spa on Sunday, April 26, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fond du Lac Public Library.

The next Gone Girl?

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins is on the bestseller list and had much interest before it was published because it was described as the next Gone Girl. I found the book hard to put down once I started reading it. It is not exactly like Gone Girl in plot or characters, but if you enjoy suspenseful books with unreliable narrators, then you will like The Girl on the Train. Main character Rachel takes the train to London every day.

'Out of the Blue' exhibit in April

Ten members of the Open Door Artist organization will present, Out of the Blue, their seventh annual themed show, April 1 through May 6 at the Langdon Divers Gallery at the Fond du Lac Public Library.

Make a macrame bottle centerpiece April 18

Take a couple of hours this spring to make a fun centerpiece for your summer picnic table. The Fond du Lac Public Library’s Crafternoon program 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 18, will do just that; crafters will make a Hippie Macramé Bottle candleholder or vase with an upcycled wine or liquor bottle, some twine and carefully placed knots.

History of WI supper clubs on April 16

If you’re not from Wisconsin, you might think supper clubs are members-only. But natives know that a supper club is the place for a brandy old fashioned and the best fish fry or prime rib around.
