The Story of The Desk

It started in 2010 with an internet posting making the rounds among library fans around the world. It was a picture of a desk made of books at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. It was bounced around the in boxes at the Fond du Lac Public Library and eventually shared on the library’s Facebook page.

New Express desk unveiled

Several dozen people gathered to help the Fond du Lac Public Library celebrate their first-ever branch location, FDLPL Express, on Saturday. Highlighting the event was the unveiling of a one-of-a-kind, custom-made circulation desk made of books.

Kids' hats, mittens for Giving Trees

The Fond du Lac Public Library has set up Giving Trees at the downtown library and the new FDLPL Express on east Johnson Street to collect donations of hats, scarves, mittens and gloves. Donated items will be given to the Fond du Lac Salvation Army before Christmas for distribution to local children.

Opportunity Center needs volunteer help

The Fond du Lac Public Library’s Opportunity Center is a free computer lab resource where people can get help looking for work, writing resumes and researching employers. The center is staffed by local volunteers who work one-on-one with users, many of whom lack computer skills. This help is essential.

I like to read books with a Wisconsin connection, and The Queen is a Christian thriller in the Patrick Bowers series that is set in northern Wisconsin. All of the books in the series are named for chess pieces starting with the first book The Pawn. This is a great book to read for those who like suspense and espionage.

FDL Visual Arts member show in Dec

The 21 members of Fond du Lac Visual Arts have collaborated in a show aptly named “21,” at the Fond du Lac Public Library gallery through December. Each member submitted two works, and the range is vast. Jewelry, ceramics, watercolor, collage, oils … it’s a multimedia exhibit that showcases the diversity of the group.

St. Nicholas sale at the BookCellar

The BookCellar is celebrating St. Nicholas Day with a two-day half-off sale. On Saturday, December 3, and Monday, December 5, books, movies, CDs and more are all half off (with exception of collectors’ materials and the newest best sellers).

Desk unveiling at grand opening

What’s under the cover? The grand opening of FDLPL Express, the Fond du Lac Public Library’s first branch, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 10, will feature a major unveiling. The wrapping will come off the branch’s circulation desk, which was designed and created locally.

Letters to Santa due Dec 5

When it comes to Christmas wishes, kids know it’s smart to put them in writing. Kids who drop off their letters to Santa at the Children’s Room at the Fond du Lac Public Library by Monday, December 5, will get a personalized reply by Santa mailed to their homes before Christmas.
