Library Cards

How do I get a Library Card?
Fond du Lac Public Library will issue a library card to any resident of the state of Wisconsin. Proof of current street address is required. A parent’s or guardian’s permission is required in order to issue a library card to anyone under the age of sixteen. The parent or guardian must sign applications in person as proof that permission is given.

What if I lose my card?
Let us know right away so that we stop or inactivate your card to prevent others from using it. The replacement fee for a lost library card is $1.00, $.50 for children 13 and under.

Should I notify you if I change my address?
YES! Let us know whenever you change any information on your library card application, including your e-mail address.

May others use my card?
NO! Everything checked out on your card is your responsibility.

May I check out if I don't have my card with me?
It is best (and quickest) to use your card. However, we will make an exception if you show identification with your picture on it.

What is my PIN?
A PIN# is required to check your patron information and to place holds. If you did not select your own PIN, a number was assigned to you. It is the last four digits of your phone number.

Loan Periods, Fines, Renewals & Returns

How long may I keep library materials and can I renew them?
Almost all materials may be checked out for 21 days and may be renewed for another 21 days if no one has a hold on them. The exceptions are:

  • Videos/DVDs - These are checked out for 7 days and renewed for 7 days.
  • Interlibrary loans - These are items we get for you from libraries outside the Winnefox Library System. These items follow the checkout rules of the lending library and usually are not renewable.

How do I renew items?
You may call the Circulation Department or the Help Desk at 929-7080, Option 3 or 6, or renew them yourself through our Online Catalog. Click on "Your Account" and then enter your library card number and PIN. You will see a list of the items you currently have checked out. [Note that your checkouts may be on more than one page. To see all your checkouts, click on "View All Items Checked Out to You" at the bottom of the screen.] Click the box in front of the item(s) you wish to renew and then click on the "Renew selected items" button. The date due will change to the new date if the item is available for renewal. The renewal will fail if the item already has been renewed or if another patron has a hold on it.

Is there a grace period for overdue materials?
There is no grace period for any overdue materials. All materials are due on the due date.

What is the charge for overdue items?
There is an overdue charge of 10 cents per day on material from the adult area, and 5 cents per day for material from the children's room. Videos are an exception. They are 50 cents per day from the adult collection and 25 cents per day from the children's room. Feel free to renew items online, by phone, or in person on the day items are due in order to avoid fines.

How many items may I check out?
The total number of library items that you may have on your account at one time is 75.

How will I know when I have fines or overdue items?
At present one reminder is sent 10 days after an item is overdue. A bill is sent at 30 days past due.
You may ask for this information at the Circulation Desk or look it up online under "Your Account."
If possible, please return overdue items to a staff member at the Circulation Desk where you can pay the fine.

May I return materials to another library?
Yes, your materials may be returned to most public libraries in these counties: Fond du Lac, Winnebago, Marquette, Green Lake and Waushara. You can wait until the day they are due, since they will be checked in that same day at those libraries.
