Filling out FAFSA

Prospective college students and their parents can get help with filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at the Fond du Lac Public Library. Lauren Lopez from Great Lakes Higher Education will hold a free open workshop; just drop in. Computers will be available, or students can bring their laptops, for applications to be filled out on site. Lopez is bilingual, so will be able to assist in English and Spanish. She recommends arriving no later than 7:30 p.m. to have enough time to complete the application. To complete the FAFSA, students and parent need to provide the following information:
• Social Security numbers
• Dates: birth, death, marriage and divorce
• 2012 W2's and tax returns
• Most recent bank statements
• Amounts of any other income
• Value of any other assets
FAFSA is a form that must be filled out annually by current and anticipating university students to determine eligibility for federal student financial aid, including grants, loans and work-study programs. Many colleges also use information on the FAFSA to award non-federal aid.
