Local opera aficionado the Rev. Jack Stubbs - whose wife Laura Deming is a cellist with Lyric Opera of Chicago - will present a lively discussion of the Puccini opera 'La Boheme,' which was a smash hit when it debuted in Turin, Italy, in 1896 and today is one of the most-frequently performed operas in the world. The opera follows the lives of young bohemians - artists, writers, musicians - living and loving in the Latin Quarter of Paris in the 1840s. Stubbs will explain the significance of the opera and will play excerpts of its most-dramatic pieces. The musical 'Rent,' which opened on Broadway in 1996, is a modern retelling of the classic story. Event is free and open to the public. Registration not required.
