Fond du Lac Public Library employs about 45 full- and part-time people. Part-time positions range from 12 to 30 hours per week. The educational requirements for our positions range from less than a high school education to a Masters Degree in Library Science. All of our positions require basic computer literacy and excellent customer service capabilities. Any future openings will be posted in the library and listed on this web page. Feel free to watch any and all of these sources. We do not accept applications to keep on file when we have no openings.

The Fond du Lac Public Library is accepting applications for temporary employment in the Children's Room. Employment start and end dates will be based on your availability. Start ASAP but no later than June 11th. A physical exam and drug screening test is required prior to start.

General Provisions:

The Children's Services team is responsible for planning and implementing services to children and families whether the customer visits the library in person or online.

Under the general supervision of the Children's Coordinator, a Library Assistant performs such duties as may be required for daily operations of the Children's Area. The essential duties listed below are representative of those working in the position. This list is not meant to be all inclusive. Other tasks may be assigned if they are of a similar nature. All library employees must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends.

Essential Duties:

Assists patrons in using the computer catalog, Internet, Word Processing, and other electronic technologies and audio-visual equipment.Staffs the Children's Services DeskAssists children and their families in locating appropriate materials and provides readers assistance.Answers reference questions.

Troubleshoots computer and other equipment.Participates in planning and presenting programs by selecting books, setting up craft projects or other activities, operating equipment. May work with volunteers as part of this process as well. Programs may be given at the main library, a branch or satellite, or at a school or other partner institution.May assist other staff in promoting the Children's Department programs, services and materials both in the library and to outside groups.Distributes information on children's services and programs to community agencies as assigned.May provide assistance to volunteers as they perform tasks in the Children's Room.

Minimum Requirements of the Position:

A. Knowledge and Skills

Ability to communicate with and interact well with children, their parents and care givers.Ability to present lively and entertaining programs stressing the principles of Family Literacy.Intimate knowledge of Microsoft Office, the Internet and social media, and the ability to master the Integrated Library Automation System.Ability to establish good working relationships with other staff members and interact as part of a team.Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions while working independently.Willingness and ability to make logical exceptions to library procedures when warranted.

Education/License/Certification RequirementsAssociates degree or Minimum of 54 Credits from a 4 year college or University. Experience working with Children.

C. Physical Requirements

Standing, walking, stooping, and reaching.Talking and hearing; use of the telephone.Far vision at 20 feet or further, and near vision at 20 inches or less.Handling: picking up and shelving materials.Fingering: keyboarding, writing, filing, sorting, stapling, and cutting.Lifting, carrying: 50 pounds or less.Ability to push or pull a cart of materials on wheels weighing 20 – 50 pounds.

D. Working Environment

Library with occasional outside programming in schools, daycare and community centers.
