Local Students’ Artwork on Display

Creative kids will be front and center for Celebrate Youth Art Month. More than 100 pieces of artwork from local students will be on display at the Fond du Lac Public Library March 2 through April 5.

The six art instructors in Fond du Lac School District middle and high schools have selected the best paintings, drawings and other two-dimensional art from their classes for display. Coordinator Barbara Schneider, art teacher at Fond du Lac High School and Sabish Middle School, said the show has been around for many years, and it’s a great way to celebrate and recognize young artistic talent.

The display will be available for viewing during library hours: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Job Smart U class Addresses Problem Work Histories

In this competitive market, it’s important for job seekers to put their best foot forward. Sometimes job histories aren’t perfect. There can be gaps or other challenges. Job Smart U offers Overcoming Challenging Work Histories 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 11.

Presenter Jim Hubbard, retired longtime Mercury Marine executive, will discuss how applicants can address troubled work histories in a positive, honest way. Hubbard will suggest how job seekers can address terminations, criminal backgrounds, lapses in employment history and other issues that, left unaddressed, could put an applicant in a negative light.

Hubbard has more than 40 years’ experience in human resources and upper management with Brunswick Corp., including 19 years with Mercury Marine. Hubbard retired in June 2008 and remains active in the Fond du Lac community in myriad endeavors.

Registration is not required but encouraged and can be done online or by calling (920) 929-7080, ext. 155.

Job Smart U is a series of classes on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month organized by the Opportunity Center at the library. Opportunity Center programs are coordinated by AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteers Josh Cowles and Sara Byrnes.

Fond du Lac Reads Camp-In and Presentation

Mother Nature is notoriously fickle this time of year. So when considering an early spring campout, the safest bet is to stay indoors. Fond du Lac Reads program organizers agree. They’re hosting the Camp-In Dinner and Presentation on Tuesday, March 23, at UW-Fond du Lac.

Each year the library’s Fond du Lac Reads program encourages the whole community to read the same book (this year it’s two) and participate in programs and events that celebrate the books’ themes. The 2010 books are The Daring Book for Girls and The Dangerous Book for Boys. Both are all-ages collections of ideas, projects and stories about activities that some of us have long forgotten and many have yet to discover. The books have plenty of photos, illustrations and easy how-to instructions on dozens of ideas designed to spur imagination and creativity.

The Camp-In dinner will start at 6 p.m. at the UW Commons. Indoor campers will enjoy campfire beef stew over fresh-baked biscuits, potatoes, salad, dessert and milk and coffee. A cash bar will be available. The Eclectics will entertain campers with folk favorites and sing-alongs. Dinner tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door; tickets are on sale now at the library.

Following dinner, at 7 p.m. in the UW Prairie Theater, local naturalist and birding expert Jeff Bahls will present Birds of Horicon Marsh. Bahls, a birder for 17 years and waterfowl hunter for 37 years, is president of the Horicon Marsh Bird Club. The sixth-generation Dodge County resident lives near Lowell, where he’s returned 96 acres into wildlife habitat. Bahls will talk about what he’s learned in his 30 years as a Horicon Marsh volunteer and part-time employee of the Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources and U.S. Forest Service. Bahls’ presentation is free of charge – no tickets required.

Fond du Lac Reads is sponsored by the Friends of the Fond du Lac Library, UW-Fond du Lac, Linstrom’s Special Occasion Catering, Salem United Methodist Church, Fond du Lac Area Writers and SUNSEED Eco-Education Center.
