Team Trivia

Do you know how many tiles are in a standard Scrabble game? What’s the most abundant element in the universe? What vehicle was invented to overcome trench warfare? Do you like to think really hard about stuff you’ve forgotten a long time ago? Do you enjoy getting together with friends, laughing a lot and helping a great cause?

To answer the first three questions: 100, hydrogen and the tank. To answer the last: Team Trivia! The 10th Annual Team Trivia event is coming up Tuesday, February 9, and Thursday, February 11, at UW-Fond du Lac. All you have to do is get together with three of the smartest (or just most fun) people you know, pay $100 per team, and enjoy a fun evening to benefit literacy. Sign-in starts at 5:30 p.m., and the game starts at 6:30 p.m. A soup-and-sandwich dinner for purchase and cash bar will be provided by Linstrom’s Catering.

Anyone can play. The fun is in the group-think, trying to come up with answers to questions on music, movies, history, sports, literature, geography, science and Wisconsin. At the end of the game, scores are tallied and awards will be given to the top three teams. The first-place winning team on February 9 will be invited back to compete – for free – on February 11. Teams also can buy one “answer” per game, for $10. These come in very handy when a really tough question comes up.

Team Trivia is a fundraiser for Fond du Lac Adult Literacy Services, a non-profit organization that provides individualized, confidential tutoring to adults in the areas of reading, writing, math and English as a Second Language. Print out your registration form here or contact Literacy Services Executive Director Nancy Lanyi at (920) 921-1907 or lanyi@fdlpl.org.

‘Investing for Beginners’ Class at MoneySmart U

Back by popular demand, MoneySmart U is repeating its free class, Investing for Beginners, on Tuesday, February 9, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., in the Mid-States Training Room, located in the lower level of the library.

Presenter Katherine Schuessler, from the Marian University School of Business, will explain the different types of investments (cash, stocks, bonds, etc.), how to make money on investments, explain about exchanges and indexes and discuss the need for a diversified portfolio.

Light refreshments will be served. There is no charge for the class, but class size is limited. Registration is appreciated at the Money Smart Neighborhood site.

Money Smart U programs are funded by a Smart Investing @ Your Library grant made possible through a partnership between the American Library Association and the FINRA Investor Education Foundation. The library has a special MoneySmart collection financial resource material, on the second floor of the library, as well as access to a number of financial databases, which are available 24/7 at www.fdlpl.org to anyone with a library card.

Get Expert Job-Interview Tips At Job Smart U

A great resume can get you in the door, but landing the job depends on the interview. Job Smart U is offering free practice job interviews conducted by a veteran human resources specialist on Thursday, February 11, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Fond du Lac Public Library.

The interviews will be conducted by Paul Holland, who has 35 years’ experience as an HR professional, working primarily in the manufacturing industry, most recently at Giddings and Lewis. He’s conducted countless interviews for every type of job, from top executives to entry-level. After each practice interview, Holland will offer a constructive critique, with suggestions on how to answer the tough questions, ways to polish your resume and tips on presentation.

Participants should prepare for the practice interviews as if they were on a real job search, wearing appropriate business attire. A resume will be requested in advance. Each interview session could take up to one hour.

Space is limited, so interviews will be scheduled by appointment only. To sign up, contact Josh Cowles, (920) 929-7080, ext. 156, or cowles@fdlpl.org.

Dangerous! Daring! Fond du Lac Reads Goes Out on the Edge

Can you tie a timber hitch? Speak in spy lingo? Make a stink bomb? Write a haiku?

You could if you joined Fond du Lac Reads. This year they’ll dig into two books: The Dangerous Book for Boys and The Daring Book for Girls. Both books are all-ages collections of ideas, projects and stories about activities that some of us have long forgotten and many have yet to discover. The books have plenty of photos, illustrations and easy how-to instructions on dozens of ideas designed to spur imagination and creativity.

The Dangerous Book for Boys, written by brothers Conn and Hal Iggulden, covers such territory as identifying insects, building a tree house, tying knots and shooting marbles. The Daring Book for Girls, by Miriam Peskowitz, gets into making a whistle, telling ghost stories, karate moves and folding “the coolest paper airplane ever.”

Each year, Fond du Lac Reads encourages the whole community to read books together and then participate in themed events and activities during the month of March. The library has ordered dozens of copies of each book, which are available for borrowing now.

“A lot of us have a bad case of cabin fever by the time March rolls around,” said Susan Ringer, readers’ advisory librarian. “We thought these books would be the perfect anecdote.”

The Dangerous/Daring March programs include an art/haiku display, a class about understanding money, mother-daughter and father-son programs, a magic workshop for teens and programs on calligraphy, gardening and hobbies. The big event of the program will be the annual dinner-and-more. On March 23, Fond du Lac Reads will host a Winter Camp-In at UW-Fond du Lac, featuring campfire beef stew, biscuits and dessert, music and sing-along with the folk group The Eclectics Trio, followed by a program from renowned Dept. of Natural Resources wildlife educator William Volkert, who will talk about birding in the Fond du Lac region. Tickets for the Winter Camp-In are available now at the library Circulation Desk: $10 in advance; $12 at the door.

Fond du Lac Reads is sponsored by the Friends of the Fond du Lac Library, UW-Fond du Lac, Linstrom’s Catering, Salem United Methodist Church, Fond du Lac Area Writers, SUNSEED Eco-Education Center and the Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources.

Photographer/Author to Sign Copies of Book

Photographer and author Annette Boelk will sign copies of Wings and Wildlife in the Wetlands from noon to 4 p.m. Monday, February 15, in the library's Langdon Divers Community Gallery. The book, which will be for sale at the signing ($38.95 plus tax), features more than 200 photos taken by Boelk, primarily at Horicon Marsh. The photos illustrate the habitat, survival skills and beauty of wetland creatures. An exhibit of Boelk’s wildlife photography is on display in the gallery through February 25.
