History of the Fond du Lac, Wisconsin Vital Statistics Index

The Vital Statistics Index is composed of references to marriages, milestone anniversaries, funerals and obituaries which have been found in the Fond du Lac newspapers. The 1846-1970 items are a part of the Fond du Lac newspaper index begun in 1944 when the library board decided that a history of Fond du Lac should be prepared. Miss Alice Cameron, a longtime resident who "knew all levels of the city's social structure" was hired. She researched Fond du Lac history and established a card index of persons, places, and events. The indexing started with the 1846 Fond du Lac newspapers. The result was an index on cards which covered many subject areas in the Fond du Lac community, from politics to sports to manufacturing. Two of the most used categories have been Obituaries and Marriages.

The indexing was continued by public library staff until the early 1970's. It was then discontinued because of time constraints. Subsequently, the Fond du Lac County Genealogical Society began clipping obituaries and mounting them on cards, which the library now has in a catalog. In the early 1980's volunteers from the Fond du Lac County Genealogical Society began indexing obituaries on computer and cumulating them into annual indexes.

The Fond du Lac Public Library has combined the obituary and marriage information from all of these sources to create the Vital Statistics Index, which is now available through the library's website.
