Something new has taken root at the Fond du Lac Public Library that will help the community grow this summer.

Starting May 1, the library will offer its first Seed Library, where anyone with a library card can receive free seeds to plant in their garden. The Seed Library will be located at the Main Library adjacent to the entrance to the Children’s Room.

The Seed Library is a resource for the Fond du Lac community to connect library users with seeds that can provide free, fresh produce, herbs, and flowers. It is supported by local donations and a small seed budget.

How does it work? Individuals may select up to seven free seed packets according to the container or space and sunlight they have to grow the seeds. Those packets then may be “checked out” with a library card to take home. Seeds will come in small packets with growing instructions.

Those who use the seed library are encouraged to share photos of their bounty to the library’s social media channels: Facebook @FDLPL and Instagram @fondylibrary.

The library believes in connecting the community with resources that can enrich their lives, including books and equipment that are educational, entertaining, or vital to an improved quality of life. The new Seed Library, being introduced in conjunction with Summer Reading 2024's theme of "Read, Renew Repeat," will enable Fond du Lac residents to gain the joy and healthy produce a garden provides with fewer barriers to starting it.
